A find for a spy

Over the past year on the territory of the Novosibirsk region, several foreigners have been prosecuted for collecting classified information in the field of scientific developments of scientists of the Siberian branch of the Russian Academy of Sciences, said on January 25, the head of the FSB of the Russian Federation for the Novosibirsk region Sergey Savchenkov.

According to him, the employees of the regional FSB department last year suppressed the illegal activities of a citizen of the People's Republic of China, who collected information concerning new developments of the Russian Academy of Sciences. A Chinese citizen was convicted under Article 183 of the Criminal Code of the Russian Federation (collecting information that is a trade secret) and expelled from the country. Several more people were expelled from the Russian Federation for collecting information on technologies such as the creation of weapons of mass destruction.

"We have recently declassified a lot of classified materials," Savchenkov told reporters. – The increased interest in developments in the Academy of Sciences continues. No matter how anyone says that this is an ordinary scientific exchange, but I do not understand the adequacy of the exchange of grants – what we give and what we receive."

The head of the regional FSB department also noted the great interest of foreigners and special services in the State Scientific Center of Virology and Biotechnology "Vector", located in the Koltsovo science city of the Novosibirsk region. According to Savchenkov, this facility is under constant control of international organizations.

"We all know that work on the creation of new types of biological weapons has not been carried out there for a long time," said the head of the regional FSB department, "But interest in new developments of our Vector is still great."
