A small but proud Russian biotechnology

Industrial biotechnology in Russia and the world
STRF.ruTrends in the development of industrial biotechnology and the latest technological achievements in this field will be presented at the 6th World Congress on Industrial Biotechnology and Bioprocess (The Sixth Annual World Congress on Industrial Biotechnology & Bioprocessing), which will be held on July 19-22, 2009 in Montreal, Canada.

This event is one of the largest annual events for specialists of the biotechnology industry. In 2009, the Congress will bring together over 1,000 participants who will present more than 250 presentations in five halls of the Congress. The latest achievements and products of leading companies from all over the world will be presented at the industry exhibition of the Congress.

Russia will be represented at the Congress by a delegation, which will include Raif Vasilov, President of the Ovchinnikov Society of Biotechnologists of Russia, Alexey Ablaev, President of the National Biofuel Association, representatives of the Union of Biotechnological Industry Enterprises and others.

According to Raif Vasilov, "participation in such significant events is especially important for Russia today." "Currently, our country is at the most important stage of making a strategic decision," Vasilov believes, "how to bring the domestic bioindustry from an outsider position in the conditions of the global biotech boom." The answer to this question is accumulated in a document that will be submitted to the OBR for consideration in the State Duma as part of parliamentary hearings in the near future – this is the "Strategy for the development of the biotechnology industry for 2008-2020", which was developed taking into account the Concept of early socio-economic development of the Russian Federation until 2020.

The Strategy proposed by the OBR until 2020 has a serious foundation – this is the National Program "Development of Biotechnology in Russia for 2006-2015", developed by the Society of Biotechnologists, which has been working purposefully to revive the bioindustry in Russia since 2003 and is a recognized expert on the international biotechnology market.

Industrial biotechnology products concern almost all industries. Some examples are medicine (antibiotics, hormones, vaccines, enzymes, diagnostic systems), agriculture (feed protein, amino acids, plant and animal protection products), food industry (yeast, alcohol, glucose syrups), chemical production (polysaccharides, biodegradable polymers, biocatalysis), energy (bioethanol, biogas, biodiesel), ecology (bioremediation, biodiversity conservation).

Currently, the bulk of biopharmaceutical products produced in Russia are bioengineers, that is, medicines that have proven bioequivalence and therapeutic interchangeability with original drugs of similar composition, for which the patent protection period has expired. The share of the Russian Federation in the global volume of biotechnological products is currently less than 0.2 percent, according to the level of development of the bioindustry, Russia ranks 70th in the world.
