Another step towards a universal vaccine against all flu strains

Universal vaccineScientists from the Center for Vaccine Development at Saint Louis University (Saint Louis University Center for Vaccine Development), USA, are one step closer to creating a universal influenza vaccine.

The research is led by the director of the center Robert Belshe (Robert Belshe).

Every year pharmaceutical companies produce various vaccines developed for a specific strain. However, having been vaccinated, a person can still get sick with another type of the same disease. And if people are vaccinated not only with a seasonal, but also with a universal vaccine, it will be possible to provide more reliable protection against influenza.

The universal vaccine will be able to protect a person from a variety of flu strains and prevent death and serious complications from the disease, EurekAlert reports. Belsh and his colleagues studied a vaccine created on the basis of proteins that are contained inside viruses A and B.

During the study, 377 healthy adult patients received three injections of the universal influenza vaccine Bivalent Influenza Peptide Conjugate Vaccine (BIPCV) for six months. The results of the experiment showed that a small dose of the vaccine is well tolerated by the body, is completely safe and causes an immune response that protects a person from complications and death from influenza.
