It seems that people suffering from cardiovascular diseases, but at the same time having a high level of omega-3 polyunsaturated fatty acids, age more slowly than cardiologist patients who do not have such a useful quality.

It has already been proven that "cores" with high levels of omega-3 in the blood have a better chance of survival. New data obtained by scientists from the University of California, San Francisco, explain why this is happening.

The head of the project, Ramin Farzaneh-Far, tracked the biological age of the organism by the length of telomeres - the end sections of chromosomes that participate in replication and ensure the stability of the chromosome. It is proved that the length of telomeres and the biological age of the body are closely related. The longer the telomeres, the "younger" the body.

According to new data, the higher the level of omega-3 in the blood, the slower the shortening of telomeres occurs. The study involved 608 patients suffering from heart disease for an average of 6 years. In the course of the study, it turned out that in patients with the lowest levels of omega-3 in the blood, the rate of telomere shortening is 2.6 times higher than in patients with high levels of omega-3.

The data obtained certainly require further research. It is unclear whether there is a relationship between the presence of heart disease and the level of omega-3 – or high levels of omega-3 somehow slow down the reduction of telomere length in completely healthy organisms. It is also possible that the relationship found is very indirect, because in addition to heart disease, many other factors that occur in such patients were not considered: the presence of inflammatory foci in the body, obesity, oxidative stress, lack of physical activity, etc.

In the meantime, Dr. Farzaneh-Far recommends that patients with cardiovascular diseases consume at least 1 gram of omega-3 daily. To do this, you can introduce the meat of fish such as salmon, mackerel or tuna into the diet. Naturally, you should first consult with your doctor. It is advisable for healthy people to eat fish at least twice a week.
