China was the first in the world to clone a dog using gene editing

"EKD!"

The Chinese biotech company Sino Gene has successfully cloned a dog named Lun Lun, which is the world's first case of cloning somatic cells of a dog using gene editing, reports the portal CNS (China first country to clone dogs via gene editing).

According to the test results, Lun Lun did not inherit genes from a surrogate mother, but is a clone of the Apple dog, the first dog in the world created using the gene editing method.

Lun Lun was born on May 28. Another surrogate dog was foaled by two cloned puppies on June 14.

Since the cloning of Dolly the sheep in 1997, scientists have switched to other mammals, including mice, cows, pigs, rabbits and horses. Dogs are considered one of the most difficult animals to clone, reports Science and Technology Daily. The successful cloning experience has put China in second place in the development of somatic dog cloning technologies after South Korea.

According to the application Zhao Jianping, Deputy General Director Sino Gene, this technology will be used for both working and domestic dogs. At the moment, there are not enough police officers, service dogs, and guide dogs in China, as their breeding is a difficult process, so most are purchased from abroad.

The Nanchang Police Dog Training Center has already expressed its interest in SinoGene's results and is currently negotiating cooperation. Also, cloning dogs will help pet owners who find it difficult to come to terms with the death of pets.

The first commercial cloning company in China was founded in 2014 in Shandong Province and has already successfully cloned three Tibetan mastiff puppies. Another of the world's largest commercial cloning laboratories is located in Tianjin.
