Companies offering DNA analysis suspended in California

The California Department of Health has sent letters to thirteen companies offering deoxyribonucleic acid (DNA) analysis services ordering them to suspend operations.

According to the Associated Press, the fact of receiving notifications has already been confirmed by Navigenics and 23andMe, one of the co-founders of which is Anne Wojcicki, the wife of billionaire and Google co-founder Sergey Brin. The reason for the temporary ban on the companies' activities was complaints from customers dissatisfied with the quality of testing and service rates.

The Ministry of Health intends to make sure that the activities of companies offering DNA analysis comply with the adopted legislative norms. Firms, in particular, are required to submit documentation confirming the certification of their laboratories. In addition, companies must prove that the tests were carried out exclusively at the request of medical professionals, as required by regulations.

Companies that have come to the attention of the Ministry of Health have two weeks to collect the necessary documents. For this period, they will not be able to provide services in California. If violations are found during the audit, companies may face a fine of up to $ 3,000 per day.
