Dismissal by reduction

The company 23andMe ex-wife Brin fired 14% of employees

The company 23andMe, founded by the ex-wife of the co-founder of Google Sergey Brin by Anna Voizhitski, cut 100 employees – this is about 14% of the entire staff, writes Forbes USA with reference to a representative of 23andMe. The company attributed the cuts to a decline in sales of DNA testing kits.

A company representative said that the layoffs did not affect the therapeutic division of 23andMe, which develops new drugs in cooperation with the American pharmaceutical giant GSK. He noted that in the near future, 23andMe will focus on its core business – the sale of DNA analysis kits and drug development. At the same time, the division that is engaged in attracting patients from the 23andMe genetic database for clinical research will be reduced.

Anna Wojcicki herself said in an interview with CNBC that she was surprised by the decline in sales of DNA analysis kits. She believes that this could be caused by clients' concern for privacy: they, according to her, are increasingly worried about where their health data is coming from and whether law enforcement agencies have access to them.

In 2018, 23andMe's revenue amounted to $475 million, the company served almost 5 million customers, but has not yet turned a profit.
