More than 4,100 Catalan residents fell ill after drinking bottled water in the office, reports Live Science (4,000 Sickened in Spain: How Does a Virus Get into Bottled Water?). All the patients caught norovirus, an RNA-containing virus of the Caliciviridae family. In most cases, norovirus is the cause of outbreaks of gastrointestinal diseases of a non-bacterial nature.

Doctors in Catalonia reported that within six days, office workers with severe vomiting and diarrhea began to arrive at hospitals. "This is the first time we have seen people getting the virus from bottled water. Something needs to be done about it," medical workers comment.

Typical diseases caused by noroviruses include gastrointestinal diseases in the autumn-winter period, one of the symptoms of which is nausea, viral gastroenteritis, as well as the popularly known "stomach flu" – the list can be supplemented with diseases associated with inflammation of the stomach and arising from other viruses and bacteria.
