Genetic engineering against African plague

China will create a super pig to save the economy

In China, they are trying to breed a genetically modified type of pig that is resistant to cold winters and has immunity to African swine fever (ASF). This is reported by Bloomberg.

In the context of a trade war, rapid population growth and dwindling resources, as well as the ASF epidemic, China, the United States and other major meat consumers and exporters face the task of ensuring food security and future supplies to the market. The governments of such countries have turned to genetic engineering to create a super pig.

African swine fever in Asia as of September 17, 2019 according to the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) – WM.

"With the help of experiments, researchers breed pigs that have more muscle mass and are more resistant to cold winters (their fat layer is smaller, and heat exchange is better). In addition, pigs are being given the ability to resist deadly viruses, including ASF," the agency explains.

According to him, a successful experiment was conducted by scientists from the European Roslin Institute – they have already managed to create a pig that is potentially resistant to ASF. In 1996, it was at this institute that a mammalian animal, Dolly the sheep, was cloned for the first time.

Due to ASF and mass slaughter of livestock, the animal population in China has at least halved since August 2018, Reuters wrote. The epidemic led to a 30 percent increase in product prices, inflation in China reached 3.8 percent, which is the highest value since 2012. As previously reported, this threatens the further growth of the Chinese economy.
