Looking at the database…

A bug in the computer of criminologists

Radio SwedenMalfunctions in the computer system of the Swedish State Forensic Laboratory SKL led to the fact that several dangerous crimes were solved with a great delay.

In 2012, it turned out that, since at least 2006, comparative DNA search due to a computer error did not work for 1300 people entered into the laboratory database. In total, there are about 130 thousand people in this DNA database.

This led, in particular, to the fact that the perpetrator of the rape in 2006 could not immediately be detected by the sperm and DNA left by him, although it appeared in the database for another crime. The rape was discovered six years later.

Due to a computer malfunction, seven more dangerous crimes were investigated for too long, four of them rape and one robbery, the newspaper Mitt i Nacka reports. And in just 39 cases, it was revealed that the computer did not find the profile of the person with the desired DNA, although it was in the database.

In 2012, the SKL computer system was updated and has been working accurately ever since.
