New scientific development of Cuban scientists

A clinical trial of a vaccine for HIV-infected people is taking place in Cuba

REGNUM

A therapeutic vaccine aimed at reducing the viral load in patients with human immunodeficiency virus (HIV), and actively affecting the quality of life, is at the first stage of a clinical trial, the Cuban News Agency (ACN) reports.

A scientist from the Center for Genetic Engineering and Biotechnology (CIGB) of Havana, Yayri Caridad Correa Prieto, told ACN that of the nine patients on whom the TERAVAC – HIV vaccine (its working name) is being tested, none had adverse reactions or symptoms of toxicity. She also noted that the goal is to replace the current three–way therapy, consisting of a combination of several methods that prevent the development of HIV. The old therapy is very effective, since antiretroviral inhibitors block the spread of the virus, but can lead to concomitant organ damage, forcing in some cases, to suspend treatment for a while.

It should be noted that on September 10, 2016, Cuban doctors presented a therapeutic vaccine against lung cancer in Colombia – the result of twenty years of scientific research at the Center for Molecular Immunology in Cuba. The drug was demonstrated during the first International Symposium on Active Immunotherapy, organized in the Colombian Medellin. Thus, Colombia, along with Cuba, Peru and Paraguay, will become the fourth country in the world where the vaccine, known as "Simavax", will be officially registered.
