A new tuberculosis vaccine for adults may appear as early as 2019

A new tuberculosis vaccine for the adult population of Russia is currently at the stage of clinical trials, and its creation may be completed as early as 2019. This was announced on Thursday by the first Deputy Minister of Health of the Russian Federation Tatyana Yakovleva at a press conference in TASS dedicated to the state anti-tuberculosis policy.

"It [the vaccine] has completely passed the stage of preclinical studies, the first stage of clinical trials, has shown its high effectiveness, I think this year we will finish the second stage of clinical trials, we will have a new vaccine for adults," she said, adding that specialists from the National The Gamalei Research Center for Epidemiology and Microbiology.

Tuberculosis is an infectious disease of humans and animals, the causative agent is Mycobacterium tuberculosis (Koch's bacillus). Most often they affect the lungs, and sometimes the nervous, genitourinary, bone, digestive systems, brain, skin, eyes. The disease is transmitted by airborne droplets and proceeds, as a rule, in a latent form, but in some cases it acquires an open, active form of infection.

Screening programs, medical examinations, and vaccination are used to prevent tuberculosis. According to the World Health Organization, 10 million people get tuberculosis every year in the world, one in ten is a child. Tuberculosis remains the main infectious cause of death in the world, claiming almost 4.4 thousand lives every day. According to Rospotrebnadzor, in Russia in 2018, more than 61.5 thousand people fell ill with tuberculosis, which is 7.7% less than in 2017.
