Practice brain surgery in a 3D simulator

Virtual Patient

Copper news

The American company Surgical Theater has created a simulator system that allows surgeons to rehearse an operation on a virtual patient. The peculiarity of the simulator, called "Surgical Training Platform" (Surgical Rehearsal Platform, SRP), is the visualization of the patient's anatomy from images taken using computer and magnetic resonance imaging. During the 3D operation, doctors will see a realistic image of surgical instruments and the correct reaction of the patient's tissues to the doctor's actions.

The platform can be adapted to various types of operations, including surgical intervention for cerebral vascular aneurysm, pituitary tumor and meningioma. The developers have already requested permission for the widespread use of their product in the FDA, it is expected that the application will be considered in the spring of 2013.

A selection of photos and videos can be viewed on the Surgical Theater - VM website.
