Prize of the Alferov Foundation in the nomination "Bionanotechnology"

A gold medal, an honorary diploma of the Foundation for the Support of Education and Science (Alferov Foundation) and a check in the amount of 150 thousand rubles were awarded yesterday in St. Petersburg to Musa Khaitov, head of the laboratory of nano- and biomedical Technologies of the SSC "Institute of Immunology" of the Federal Medical and Biological Agency of Russia. "Since 2007, the award has acquired the status of an All–Russian award, for the first time this year a nomination was announced in a breakthrough, critical direction of scientific research – in the field of bionanotechnology," said the founder of the foundation, Vice President of the Russian Academy of Sciences, Nobel Prize laureate Zhores Alferov.

The results of the laureate's research have successfully withstood two rounds of competitive selection, the expert commission recognized them as "very significant and promising," the Nobel Laureate added. At a special meeting of the Presidium of the St. Petersburg Scientific Center of the Russian Academy of Sciences, Khaitov delivered a lecture on the topic "Creation and development of nanostructures with antiviral properties".

He said that "the purpose of the work is the molecular design of nanovaccines against viral infections with a high degree of effectiveness." With the help of a synthetic carrier, the vaccine will have a targeted effect on the pathogenic virus, ridding the body of the disease," said the winner of the Alferov Prize for 2008.

Alferov made the first contribution to the Fund for the Support of Education and Science in 2001, transferring a significant amount of the prize bonus of the Nobel Prize. The Foundation is designed to support the domestic system of school and higher education, primarily in the field of natural sciences and physics. The Nobel Laureate's initiative was then taken up by banking structures that allocate funds to support the most gifted students, students and young scientists.
