The heart of a genetically modified pig was successfully transplanted to a human, reports New York Times.

"This is the first successful human pig heart transplant. The eight-hour operation was performed in Baltimore on Friday, and according to surgeons at the University Medical Center Maryland, on Monday, the patient felt well," the publication reports.

Doctors monitor the patient for possible rejection, as reported, this happens even with human organ transplantation. According to the report, the 57-year-old recipient has a life-threatening heart disease, and organ transplantation from a genetically modified pig "gives hope to hundreds of thousands of patients with failed organs."
