Doctors from Russia will re-transplant bionic eyes

RIA News

The second operation for Russia to implant a cyberset in the eye of a deafblind patient will take place on Monday, a source at the Art, Science and Sport charity foundation told RIA Novosti.

At the end of June, the Scientific and Clinical Center of Otorhinolaryngology of the FMBA of Russia underwent a unique operation to install one of the most "advanced" bionic vision systems, the Argus II complex from the American company Second Sight, in the eye of Grigory Ulyanov, a 59-year-old deaf-blind volunteer from Chelyabinsk who agreed to such an experiment.

The operation was completed successfully, and now Grigory can already see the contours and large symbols using the "second sight" system. The most complicated operation, which lasted about six hours, was first performed in Russia thanks to the joint efforts of private philanthropists and Russian doctors and scientists.

After the successful completion of the first operation, its sponsors and participants, the Foundation for the Support of the Deafblind "So-unity", the Alisher Usmanov Charitable Foundation "Art, Science and Sport", the ANO "Sensor-Tech Laboratory" and the FSBI "Scientific and Clinical Center of Otorhinolaryngology of the FMBA of Russia" announced that Russian doctors will conduct another a similar operation before the end of the year with the participation of another deafblind volunteer.

The second operation, as the Alisher Usmanov Foundation told RIA Novosti, will be performed on Monday, December 4, with the participation of the same team of surgeons, doctors and engineers who performed the first implantation. Its success, as noted by Veronika Skvortsova, the Minister of Health of the Russian Federation, in July this year, will pave the way for the inclusion of such operations in the so-called "high-tech medical care".
