Ukraine begins large-scale clinical trials of cell therapy

Ukraine is launching clinical studies of the use of bone and adipose tissue stem cells and umbilical cord blood for the treatment of diseases of the cardiovascular system.

This was announced at a press conference by the chief transplant specialist of the Ministry of Health, Alexander Kukharchuk. "5 directions, 5 topics have reached the level of direct clinical research to date," he said.

The main areas of research: impaired tissue regeneration in injuries, cardiovascular diseases, blood diseases, chronic limb ischemia and diabetes mellitus.

The research will be conducted on the basis of the Institutes of Emergency and Reconstructive Surgery of the Academy of Medical Sciences (AMS), Molecular Biology and Genetics of the National Academy of Sciences, the National Institute of Cardiovascular Surgery named after Amosov AMS, Surgery and Transplantology named after Shalimov AMS and the Institute of Endocrinology and Metabolism named after Komisarenko AMS.

The work will be carried out as follows: the first year – a full–scale trial, the next 4 years - observation of people who have undergone treatment.

It is planned to attract more than 1 thousand people to the research.

Recall that in September 2007, the Cabinet of Ministers instructed the Ministry of Health to develop a procedure for monitoring the activities of healthcare institutions and scientific institutions, regardless of their subordination, related to organ, tissue and cell transplantation.
