Varenicline – not only from smoking, but also from alcoholism?

Varenicline efficiency tests will be launched next year
in the fight against alcohol addiction

Advis.ruA popular drug for the treatment of nicotine addiction Champix (varenicline), can potentially help patients trying to solve problems with alcohol.

This is stated by specialists of the Institute of Biomedical Innovation (Institute of Health and Biomedical Innovation), who plan to start clinical trials of varenicline next year.

According to preliminary data, varenicline weakens the craving for alcohol in patients, but does not contribute to the complete rejection of alcohol, according to Drug Discovery & Development (Pfizer's Chantix May Help Problem Drinkers – VM).

The drug also increases the level of dopamine, one of the neurotransmitters that can cause a feeling of pleasure (or satisfaction).

Experts note that, like tobacco, alcohol affects nicotine acetylcholine receptors in the human brain.

In turn, varenicline binds to receptors, suppressing cravings for alcohol and nicotine. Varenicline (trade name of the drug Chantix in the USA and Champix in Europe and other countries) – was created by the pharmaceutical company Pfizer.

The first sales began in 2006. Champix is used as an anti-smoking agent in adults.
