A new type of wheat, bred by genetic modification, wants to be grown in the UK next spring. A group of scientists working on the project submitted a request for the "world's first experiment" to the Department of Environmental Protection.

If they get permission, then, according to their statements, they will be able to grow wheat, which will yield 40% more yield, – reports “The Telegraph“. The new wheat produces a higher level of enzymes that stimulate plants, enhancing the effect of sunlight.

Scientists from the Universities of Essex, Lancaster and the Rothmasted research Center have discovered the possibility of growing wheat with larger grains and higher yields.

The first experiments were successfully carried out in greenhouses. Now scientists want to test whether the new varieties will grow just as well in the field. If the experiments are successful, it can seriously affect the amount of genetically modified food produced.
