Chewing gum, which reduces the threat of human-to-human transmission of coronavirus, has been developed by scientists at the University of Pennsylvania in the USA. A message about this was posted on the university's website on Friday.

Scientists, in particular, conducted experiments with the saliva of people infected with the SARS-Cov-2 coronavirus, adding ACE2 protein grown in the laboratory and contained in chewing gum to experimental samples. It turned out that this protein helps to reduce the viral load in the saliva of patients. "The virus spreads in saliva, and we know that when someone infected sneezes, coughs or talks, the virus spreads and enters the body of other people," said Henry Daniell, who heads the study, "Chewing gum makes it possible to neutralize the virus in saliva, providing perhaps an easy way to reduce the source of transmission of the disease.".
The study is still in its early stages, scientists say. Clinical studies have yet to be conducted to test the safety and effectiveness of chewing gum for humans.
