A mop is not a barbell

Housework is not considered a sport

ABC Magazine based on University of Ulster Materials: Housework Is not Always a Healthy Exercise Alternative

Mary Murphy (Marie H Murphy) from the Research Institute of Sports and Exercise Sciences of the University of Ulster in the UK (Sport & Exercise Sciences Research Institute, University of Ulster, UK) believes that housework, including cleaning, gardening, handwork should not replace regular exercise. Together with colleagues, they conducted a study to what extent weekly physical exercises performed by residents of Northern Ireland comply with the recommendations adopted in the UK, and what may be the contribution of homework to these loads.

Scientists interviewed 4,563 people. The survey participants had to remember how long their activities took, such as walking, physical activity at work or at home, sports and other activities in the past 7 days. For each activity, it was necessary to determine the intensity of the load, depending on whether the heartbeat or heart rate increased. Vigorous physical activity was understood as such episodes lasting more than 10 minutes.

As it turned out, 42% of respondents fulfill the recommended norm of vigorous physical activity of 150 minutes per week. In this group, homework takes up from 11% to 73% of all vigorous physical exercise. Of these participants, slightly more than half were men.

Scientists analyzed women separately and found that if you exclude homework, only 20.4% of them continue to perform the recommended exercise standards. At the same time, if we introduce a correction for age, gender, socio-economic status and attitude to smoking, then of all types of physical activity, housework showed a negative correlation with the body mass index of the respondents.

According to scientists, people overestimate the contribution of homework to maintaining a healthy lifestyle. The overall load level is insufficient. In addition, experts do not rule out that people tend to consume more calories as compensation for diligent housework.

Article by Murphy et al. Does doing housework keep you healthy? The contribution of domestic physical activity to meeting current recommendations for health is published in the journal BMC Public Health.
