Merck’s Gardasil Prevents HPV Infection, Genital Warts in Men

According to a report in the New England Journal of Medicine (Anna R. Giuliano et al., Efficacy of Quadrivalent HPV Vaccine against HPV Infection and Disease in Males), the Merck & Co. vaccine to prevent the development of a viral infection that causes cervical cancer in women also reduces the incidence and incidence of genital warts in young men.

A company-funded clinical trial involving 4,065 sexually active teenagers and men aged 20-29 showed that genital warts were detected in 36 study participants who received Gardasil, compared with 89 from the placebo group. Vaccination was more effective, preventing 90% of warts in those participants who were not infected at the start of the study and received all three doses of the vaccine.

Every year, about 20 thousand cases of cancer associated with human papillomavirus are diagnosed in the United States. The virus also causes about 340 thousand cases of genital warts.

Merck funded, designed and analyzed the results of the study in collaboration with researchers from H. Lee Moffitt Cancer Center and Research Institute (Florida) under the leadership of Anna Giuliano.

In the first third quarter of 2010, Gardasil's sales totaled US$ 767.6 million.
