A medical tourism agency may start operating in St. Petersburg in 2018
Medical tourism will unite the best medical practices of more than 40 institutions of St. Petersburg. As the chairman of the Committee for tourism development Andrey Mushkarev told TASS, they plan to create a single operator to work in this direction in 2018.
"We have a plan to create a St. Petersburg Medical Tourism Agency in 2018, which will combine the role of a certain router and engage in attracting customers. Now there are 40 institutions – those that fit the criteria for both regional and foreign tourists, but the list may be replenished. We try to choose not a clinic, but the best practices in a specific medical area," Mushkarev said.
According to him, the experience of South Korea will be used in the development of medical tourism in St. Petersburg. The list of offers will not include the entire state or private clinic, but its specific medical direction, capable of offering the best quality of service at an affordable price. Mushkarev noted that St. Petersburg institutions can compete in almost all areas of high-tech medicine. In particular, proton beam treatment of oncological diseases, including children's specialization, in vitro fertilization (IVF) and gene medicine, cosmetology and plastic surgery, dentistry.
"[We are considering] everything in which we can offer good quality for affordable money. Two factors are important for medical tourism: price and unavailability or long waiting for services in your country," the head of the committee noted. According to him, tourism will give an opportunity to develop medical institutions in terms of paid services.
He also noted the possibility of future cooperation with healthcare institutions of the neighboring Leningrad region and the transfer of experience to other Russian regions.
Earlier, the government of St. Petersburg adopted a program for the development of the tourism sector until 2023 worth 4.3 billion rubles. One of the directions of the program is medical tourism. It is expected to increase the number of medical tourists from 130 thousand to 325 thousand people per year.
