Life has become longer, life has become healthier

Europeans are getting older
EU-plusEuropeans are living longer and healthier lives.

This is evidenced by the third demographic report presented recently by the European Commission. In particular, every year the number of Europeans over the age of 60 increases by 2 million people. At the same time, life expectancy increases on average by 2-3 months every year.

"Life expectancy is increasing, while the European workforce is shrinking, and in some EU member states – this is happening very quickly. We have to adapt our policy," the EU Commissioner for Employment, Social Affairs and Engagement, Laszlo Andor, said on this occasion.

The birth rate in the EU countries increased slightly, amounting to 1.6 children per woman in 2008 against 1.45 in 2002. At the same time, according to the estimates of the European Commission, in order to ensure the reproduction of the population, this level should be 2.1 children per woman.

According to the report, life expectancy in 2008 was 76.4 years for men and 82.4 years for women. At the same time, the report notes that the EU population increases by 1-2 million people annually due to migration.

The European Demographic Report is published every two years.
