Epidemiologist assessed population immunity to COVID-19 in the regions

Population immunity to coronavirus is growing, in different regions it ranges from 5.1% to 65.3%, Director of the St. Petersburg Institute of Epidemiology and Microbiology named after Pasteur Academician of the Russian Academy of Sciences Areg Totolyan told RIA Novosti.

Program The Rospotrebnadzor assessment of population immunity to coronavirus started in June. At the first stage, more than 74 thousand volunteers were examined in 26 subjects. The second stage was held in September-October, the third is scheduled for the end of November – beginning of December.

Totolyan noted that if during the first stage of the study the level of immunity was in the range of 4.3-50.2%, then by the second stage it reached 5.1-65.3%.

"At the same time, an increase in the immune layer by one and a half to two times was recorded in 15 regions," the academician said.

Earlier, Totolyan reported that the immune layer of the population increased in 14 of the 25 regions participating in the study.

On Wednesday, the mayor of Moscow Sergei Sobyanin said that millions of people have natural immunity to COVID-19, which creates an immune layer.

Earlier, Alexander Gorelov, Deputy Director for Scientific Work of the Central Research Institute of Epidemiology of Rospotrebnadzor, corresponding member of the Russian Academy of Sciences, said that the end of the coronavirus epidemic in Russia is possible only after the formation of collective immunity. He predicted a decrease in the number of COVID-19 cases in the spring.

The coronavirus pandemic has swept almost the entire world. More than 50.8 million people were infected, 1.26 million died. Most cases are in the USA, India and Brazil.

In Russia, more than 1.8 million people have been infected, 31 thousand people have died.
