Against fats and covid

The fat-lowering drug provided zero mortality from COVID-19

Scientists from Israel have collected multiple clinical data that drugs to reduce the level of fats in the body prevent lung damage in patients with COVID-19. None of those taking these drugs died from infection, and most recovered in a matter of days.

A study by scientists from the Hebrew University of Jerusalem began in the summer of 2020, when it turned out that SARS-CoV-2 interferes with the effective breakdown of fats in the lungs. Therefore, the team first tested the effect of fenofibrate, which is used to combat high triglyceride levels, in the laboratory.

They then analyzed data from 1,500 COVID-19 infected patients taking fenofibrate or other similar drugs. The results of the observations described by EurekAlert turned out to be quite obvious to them.

Patients taking medications to accelerate the breakdown of fats recovered from COVID-19 in just a few days, and the mortality rate was zero.

In the control group, patients had extensive lung injuries and deaths were recorded.

"We have shown that human lungs reacted to SARS-CoV-2 by the accumulation of fats in cells and this was a critical factor in the deterioration of their condition. Meanwhile, taking medications to combat the accumulation of fats in cells contributed to a faster recovery," commented the author of the study, Yakov Nakhimas.

He believes that taking fenofibrate can change the effects of COVID-19 from devastating complications to a much more manageable form of respiratory infection, which means reducing mortality.

Currently, the team is launching clinical trials to confirm the properties of the drug in a larger sample of patients. The results of the first phase of research will be available in the coming months.
