Alzheimer's and herpes: new data

Herpes virus is associated with the development of Alzheimer's disease

Alexandra "Renoire" Alekseeva, XX2 century, based on Medical News Today: Alzheimer's risk 10 times lower with herpes medicine

According to the latest information, Alzheimer's disease has a significant correlation with the presence of the herpes virus in the body. Scientists have found that short-term use of antiviral drugs can significantly reduce the risk of Alzheimer's disease.

For a long time, researchers could not understand what is the cause of Alzheimer's disease. Postmortem analysis of brain tissue showed that people with Alzheimer's disease are more likely to be infected with strains 6 and 7 of the herpes virus. According to recent studies, there is a strong correlation between infection with the Herpes Simplex Virus (HSV) and the development of dementia in later years of life.

Vincent Chin-Hung Chen and colleagues from Chang Gung University, Taiwan, observed two groups of people for almost a decade – from 2001 to 2010. The first group consisted of 8,362 people over the age of 50 who were diagnosed with the presence of the herpes virus. In the other control group, there were 25,086 people of identical age who were not infected with the virus. What the researchers found was that in the group infected with herpes, the risk of developing dementia was 2.5 times higher than in the control group.

Also, part of the first group received antiviral drugs. Professor of Neurology and Experimental Psychology at The University of Manchester Ruth Itzhaki commented: "Despite the rather short duration of treatment with antiviral drugs, in most patients who had HSV, such therapy was able to prevent the long–term effect of the herpes virus on the brain - Alzheimer's in this subgroup developed 10 times less often."

If Alzheimer's disease is really associated with the herpes virus, then in order to prevent its development, you can not only use antiviral drugs, but also vaccinate children.

Successful antiviral therapy or vaccination practice is a good way to prove that dementia in old age is really an effect of the presence of the herpes virus in the body.
