Antibiotic from cannabis

A study presented at the annual meeting of the American Society for Microbiology (American Society for Microbiology) ASM Microbe 2019, held in San Francisco, demonstrated evidence of the antibacterial activity of cannabidiol against gram-positive flora, not inferior in strength to known antibiotics, such as vancomycin or daptomycin.

Cannabidiol is the main non–psychoactive chemical compound extracted from plants of the cannabis genus. Previously approved by the FDA for the treatment of epilepsy, it is currently being investigated for a number of other indications, including depression, pain and inflammation. Despite the limited amount of data suggesting the antibacterial activity of cannabidiol, the drug has not been thoroughly investigated for its potential as an antibiotic.

The work carried out by Dr. Mark Blaskovic at the Center for Molecular Biosciences of the University of Queensland (Australia) in collaboration with Botanix Pharmaceuticals Ltd, an early drug detection company, was aimed at studying the topical use of synthetic cannabidiol for the treatment of various skin conditions. It turned out that cannabidiol is effective against a wide range of gram-positive bacteria, including those resistant to other antibiotics, and has not lost effectiveness after long-term treatment.

Given the previously proven anti-inflammatory effect, the available safety data for humans and the potential for various delivery routes, cannabidiol can be called a promising new antibiotic. A combination of antibacterial and anti-inflammatory effects is especially attractive, which will help destroy the pathogen and reduce the damage caused by an inflammatory reaction to an infection.

It is important to note that the drug has retained its activity against bacteria that have become resistant to other common antibiotics. In conditions of long-term treatment, which leads to the development of resistance, for example, to vancomycin or daptomycin, cannabidiol does not lose effectiveness. Cannabidiol was also effective in destroying biofilms , a form of bacterial growth that causes difficult–to-treat infections.
