Copper news

From today, the drug Nalmefene, intended for the treatment of alcohol addiction and suppression of cravings for alcoholic beverages, is allowed to be used in the UK.

A drug that helps people stop drinking by reducing the need for alcohol has already been approved by the European Commission. Now the National Institute of Health and Clinical Excellence of the United Kingdom (NICE) has published an official recommendation for the use of the drug Nalmefene, also called Selincro: Drug recommended to help cut drink dependence. The drug should be taken one tablet a day if the patient wants to prevent the desire to drink.

The drug, developed by the Danish pharmaceutical company Lundbeck, is intended for people who regularly consume large amounts of alcohol, which, according to the standards of the World Health Organization (WHO), is 7.5 units per day for men and 5 units for women (one unit of alcohol is 10 milliliters of pure ethanol).

According to the developers of the drug, Nalmefene helps to gradually reduce the amount of alcohol consumed and is suitable for people who have a craving for alcohol, but do not suffer from a severe form of the disease.
