When will the menopause come?

Iranian scientists predicted the age of menopause by blood testCopper news
Iranian scientists have announced the creation of a technique that allows predicting the age of the onset of menopause by blood analysis, according to PhysOrg (Researchers develop an accurate way to predict the age when women will hit the menopause).

Researchers from the Center for Endocrine Research and the Shahid Beheshti University of Medical Sciences in Tehran examined blood samples from 266 women aged 20 to 49 years who took part in a large-scale prospective study of the Tehran Lipid and Glucose Study. In these samples, they determined the concentration of anti-Muller hormone (AMH), which regulates the maturation of eggs in the ovary. The tests were repeated three times at one-year intervals; in addition, the socio-economic and reproductive status of the women was clarified and they were subjected to a medical examination.

Based on the data obtained, scientists have built a statistical model that allows predicting the age of menopause by the concentration of AMH at a certain age (mathematical features of the model are not given in the message).

According to the head of the study, Fahimeh Ramezani Tehrani (Fahimeh Ramezani Tehrani), in 63 women who reached menopause during the study, the model predicted the age of its onset with an average accuracy of up to four months. The maximum margin of error was from one to three years.

According to researchers, early (up to 45 years) menopause is expected in women with an AMH concentration of 4.1 or less nanograms per milliliter of blood plasma at the age of 20 years; 3.3 or less nanograms per milliliter at the age of 25 years and 2.4 or less nanograms per milliliter at the age of 30 years. On the contrary, the late (after 50 years) onset of menopause is indicated by hormone concentrations of 4.5, 3.8 and 2.9 nanograms per milliliter or more in the corresponding age groups.

According to researchers, determining the expected age of menopause can provide significant assistance in family planning, since currently women who postpone childbirth until they reach a certain career or social status do not have time to give birth to a child with the early onset of menopause.
