Innovations in life science: the "hot ten" of 2009

Coming to the end of 2009 was a difficult year for all industries, and natural sciences are no exception. Despite this, companies and academic laboratories have developed a huge number of new products that raise scientific research to a new level. However, given the limited budget, which of these technologies were worth the investment in them?

To get an answer to this question, The Scientist magazine, as last year, convened a jury of competent experts, whose task was to select the ten best innovations that appeared on the market of devices and methods for conducting research in the field of life science in 2009. This year's winners include tools for visualization, gene analysis and other methods of modern biology, which allow us to study the processes occurring both inside and outside the cell with previously inaccessible detail. All the experts included in the jury are known for their achievements in expanding the technical boundaries of the possible and have published more than 600 scientific articles in total.

Briefly about the members of the juryJean Wang is an Honored Professor of Medicine at the University of California (San Diego), head of the Higher Biomedical Education program, as well as Assistant Director for Theoretical Research at the University's Cancer Center.

  • Mura.
  • David Piston is a professor of molecular physiology and biophysics at Vanderbilt University (Nashville, Tennessee). The head of the Biophotonics Institute, which is part of the university structure, and one of the heads of the University Computer Center for Research and Education.
  • Steven Wiley is a leading biologist at the Environmental Molecular Research Laboratory, part of the Pacific Northwest National Laboratory of the United States. He is a member of the editorial board and a regular columnist for one of the columns of The Scientist.
  • Shawn Levy is an expert at the HudsonAlpha Institute of Biotechnology. Prior to that, he held the position of Associate Professor of Biomedical Informatics, molecular Physiology and Biophysics at Vanderbilt University Medical Center.

Hot ten: we announce the whole listPortal "Eternal youth" http://vechnayamolodost.ru based on the materials of The Scientist:
