Cage frames

Scientists have presented a breakthrough development for tissue engineering

Svetlana Maslova, Hi-tech+

The technology is based on biocompatible 3D tissue scaffolds that can be present in the body for a year or more. The process of active tissue regeneration starts around them, and when the support is no longer needed, the remnants of the "structure" are removed from the body.

Researchers from the University of Birmingham have demonstrated the viability of tissue scaffolds to trigger tissue regeneration. Experiments have shown that the framework supports the migration of cells to the damaged area, ensures the growth of new tissue and blood vessels penetrating it.

The framework has evenly distributed and interconnected pores that ensure the diffusion of nutrients from the surrounding tissues.

The frame structure is endowed with the necessary shape, which is the key to the regenerative process, and various types of biochernils provide a wide range of strength.

Before implantation, the frame can be compressed up to 85%. He will restore the necessary geometry already in the body, the authors explain.

The materials are not toxic to healthy cells: the framework gradually decomposes, providing a reliable and long-lasting support for the growth of new tissue. You can provide support for more than a year.

Testing of the technology on mouse models showed that two months after implantation of the skeleton, it was possible to observe signs of restoration of healthy tissue without scars and inflammation. Four months later, scientists discovered functional blood vessels.

The new approach ensures the launch of the regeneration process with minimally invasive surgery and without deformation of healthy adjacent tissue, the authors concluded. While they continue a series of preclinical studies.
