Classified spermatozoa

Artificial human sperm was grown for the first time in France

<url>For the first time in the world, French scientists were able to obtain artificial human sperm in laboratory conditions.

The creation of sperm in a test tube was announced by representatives of the French company Kallistem, reports The Independent (Sperm created in lab in world first, French company claims).

Kallistem stated that they received full–fledged spermatozoa from undeveloped spermatogonia - stem cells taken by biopsy from the testes of patients.

Previously, this procedure was successfully performed only on mice. Now scientists are going to make sure of its safety in preclinical trials, and in 2017 they promise to give birth to a child from a man suffering from infertility (by taking his spermatogonial cells and growing spermatozoa from them for in vitro fertilization).

Spermatogenesis (the formation of spermatozoa) in humans takes about 72 days – it is a very complex process, and many disorders in it lead to infertility. If its technology is successful, Kallistem expects to help at least 50,000 patients a year and take a monopoly position in the two and a half billion dollar market.

However, before the publication of the patent for its process (scheduled for June 23, 2015), the company refuses to disclose its details. Not a single article has been published about the invention in peer-reviewed scientific journals. All this caused a skeptical reaction in the academic world.

(In fact, there is nothing suspicious here. All over the world, the relevant laws clearly state: for inventions, methods, etc., the details of which are published in the open press, even by the authors of the developments, patents are not issued – VM).

"Statements like those made by Kallistem cause mental anguish for many spouses. They have hope – and in a few years it dies when the new method does not reach the stage of a real clinical procedure," said Alan Pacey, professor at the University of Sheffield.
