Five prostate cancers

Prostate cancer turned out to be a group of five different diseases

The results of their study, published in the journal EBioMedicine (Ross-Adams et al., Integration of copy number and transcriptomics provides risk stratification in prostate cancer: A discovery and validation cohort study, in the public domain – VM), are important for determining tumors that are particularly prone to proliferation and aggressive metastasis.

The study examined samples of healthy and cancer-affected prostate tissue from more than 250 men. Scientists searched for abnormal chromosomes in them and evaluated the activity of 100 different genes associated with the disease. As a result, the tumors were grouped into five categories, each of which has characteristic genetic features.

The technique proposed by British scientists turned out to be more effective for predicting the course of the disease than the PSA (prostate-specific antigen) analysis and the Gleason scale (assessment of tumor differentiation) currently used. However, the new results need to be confirmed in large clinical trials.

"Our impressive results show that cancer can be classified into five genetically distinct types. This will help doctors choose the best therapy for each patient based on the characteristics of the tumor," commented the results of the study author Dr. Alastair Lamb (Alastair Lamb).
