European-Russian applied research in biotechnology

Conducting a pilot initiative within the ERA-IB project

The Foundation for Assistance to the Development of Small Forms of Enterprises in the Scientific and Technical Sphere announces the launch of a pilot initiative within the ERA-IB project.

This pilot initiative consists in the implementation of multilateral competitions for joint European-Russian projects in the field of applied research on the subject of "Industrial biotechnologies".

ERA-IB2, based on the successful completion of the ERA-IB project of the 6th Framework Program of the European Commission, continues to support international research programs in order to strengthen links between scientific research in the field of industrial biotechnologies carried out in various countries. In March 2012 ERA-IB2 launches the third joint research and development competition, the main purpose of which will be the creation of joint R&D in the field of industrial biotechnologies.

Innovative R& D and applied research projects in the field of industrial biotechnologies on the following topics are subject to financing:

• New enzyme systems for bioprocess (Improved enzyme systems for new and more efficient bioprocesses)
• Metabolic engineering and systemic biological approach for obtaining new microorganisms (Improvement of microorganisms by metabolic engineering and synthetic and systems biology approaches)
• Innovations in the processes of sequential (deep) processing of raw materials (Innovative down-stream processing)
• Innovations in biocatalysis, for example, for the synthesis of basic chemical products, including biomonomers, oligomers and polymers (Innovative fermentation and bio-catalytic processes, e.g. for platform chemicals, including bio-monomers, oligomers and polymers)
• Biological processing (including separation and conversion) of biomass (including from alternative sources) and other renewable carbon sources into products with high added value (Biological processing (including separation and conversion) of biomass, including from side streams, and other renewable carbon sources into value added products)
• New valuable products from plant and animal cell cultures (New valuable products by plant and animal cell cultures)

The ERA-IB partner organizations that will participate in the competition are listed below:

• Department for Innovation in Science and Technology (Agentschap voor Innovatie door Wetenschap en Technologie - IWT), Belgium
• Scientific and Innovation Council (Forsknings- og Innovationsstyrelsen - DASTI), Denmark
• French Environment and Energy Agency (ADEME), France
• Agency for Renewable Resources (Fachagentur Nachwachsende Rohstoffe - FNR), Germany
• Federal Ministry of Education and Science of Germany (Bundesministerium für Bildung und Forschung BMBF), Germany
• Ministry of Environment and Agriculture of Saxony (Sächsisches Staatsministerium für Umwelt und Landwirtschaft (SMUL)/Freistaat Sachsen), Germany
• Ministry of agriculture and rural development of Israel (משרד החקלאות ופיתוח הכפר), Israel
• Scientific Council (Norges forskningsråd - RCN), Norway
• National Research and Development Center (NCBiR), Poland
• Federal Office for Higher Education, Research, Development and Innovation Financing (UEFISCDI), Romania
• Foundation for Assistance to Small Innovative Enterprises (FASIE), Russia
• Ministry of Science and Innovation (MICINN), Spain
• Public Administration of the UK Technology Strategy (Technology Strategy Board –TSB), United Kingdom
• Foundation of Science and Technology of the Ministry of Education and Science of Portugal (Fundação para a Ciência e a Tecnologia (FCT)), Portugal
• Türkiye Bilimsel ve Teknolojik Araştırma Kurumu TUBITAK, Turkey

The draft application must include at least 3 and no more than 8 participants from at least 3 ERA-IB partner countries. Applications will be submitted in two stages: (1) the preliminary version of the application must be submitted by April 30, 2012 and (2) the final version of the application must be submitted by July 31, 2012.

The implementation of the projects is planned for the beginning of 2013.
