Postgraduate study at the Max Planck Institute of Evolutionary Biology

The Max Planck Institute for Evolutionary Biology and the Friedrich Miescher Laboratory are recruiting international students to participate in a PhD program in biology in Tübingen, Germany.

Duration of the program.The standard duration of work on the preparation of a dissertation is from 3 to 4 years.
Upon completion of the program, all the defenders receive a PhD degree awarded by the University of Tübingen.

General accompanying program.The first year of study.
In autumn and spring, the research group of the Max Planck Institute for Evolutionary Biology and the Friedrich Miescher Laboratory conduct two-week courses aimed at familiarizing themselves with the field of scientific research.
The courses consist of a series of seminars and laboratory workshops, which allows students to gain practical experience in research work.
Second and third years of study.Every fall, a mini-symposium is held for all PhD students.
Second-year students present their projects on posters, third-year students make oral presentations. Such symposiums allow students to gain practical experience of speaking, as well as provide an opportunity to get acquainted in detail with the problems of colleagues' research.

Research seminars.Renowned scientists from all over the world are invited to Tübengen to conduct a series of seminars.
In addition, internal seminars are held every week to discuss current research results.

Courses at the University of Tübingen.All PhD students are enrolled at the University of Tübingen on a general basis and can choose to attend courses as part of the curriculum.


Financing.During the first three years, students are funded by the organizers of the program.
At the same time, the amount of the scholarship paid usually increases in the third year of study. The need for a fourth year of postgraduate study is determined directly by research laboratories and funded from their sources. In addition, throughout their studies, students are given the opportunity to apply for additional scholarships funded by third-party organizations.

The language of instruction.The language of instruction is English.
Foreign students are offered to take German language courses, partially paid by the institute. The dissertation can be written in both English and German.

Requirements for candidates.Applicants must have a diploma of full higher education, and students of the last semester of study are also allowed.
Applications from persons with a bachelor's degree are not accepted for consideration.
The maximum age of applicants is 28 years. In some cases, exceptions are possible.

After the application review procedure, the selected persons will be invited to interviews (September 3-5). Candidates who have successfully passed the interview will start training in the period from September 2008 to March 2008.
