Three experimenters told how they published fakes in scientific journals
Two American scientists and a journalist admitted that they had been conducting a social experiment for a year, within the framework of which they published obviously absurd articles in scientific publications. They told about this on the pages of the online magazine Areo (Academic Grievance Studies and the Corruption of Scholarship), whose editor-in-chief, Helen Plakrose, was one of the participants in the study.
James Lindsey, Peter Bogossian and Helen Plakrose wrote and sent articles on social topics that were presented as ordinary research papers, meaningless and insignificant from a scientific point of view, but at the same time "politically biased" to reputable peer-reviewed publications.
The focus of two dozen works reflected what is now understood in the West as actual social problems – issues of gender identity, sexuality, racial emancipation, feminism and masculinity; attitudes towards overweight people and the like.
In such articles, any radical ideas were expressed using the conceptual apparatus used in the culture of postmodernism, feminism and racial political correctness. There was a humorous component in the works to one degree or another.
In particular, one of the articles suggested "training men like dogs" to combat the cultivation of sexual violence. In it, the authors "counted" an average of one dog rape per hour in Oregon parks, and also claimed that researchers felt the genitals of ten thousand dogs, interviewing owners about the sexual life of their pets. The stated goal of the work is through the study of the issue of "oppressed dogs" to come to an understanding of similar problems in humans and how men can be weaned from "propensity to sexual violence and intolerance." This article was noted among the 12 best publications of the publication "Gender, Place and Culture: Journal of Feminist Geography" in celebration of its 25th anniversary.
Another article claimed that when a man in erotic fantasies presents a woman without her consent, even if she does not know about it, he thereby commits an act of violence against her. In the third, the authors stated that artificial intelligence could pose a potential danger for the reason that it has a "masculine and imperialist" essence.
They also suggested considering that "a fat body is a folded body with full rights" and on the basis of this, introduce the appropriate category into professional bodybuilding. In addition, the authors proposed forcing white male students to sit on the floor chained up as compensation for the slave status of blacks in the past.
The feminist magazine accepted for publication the article "Our struggle is my struggle ...", which is a rewrite in a feminist way of one of the chapters of Adolf Hitler's program book.
The authors signed with fictitious names, posing as employees of non-existent institutions and referring to non-existent sources. However, reputable scientific publications did not notice this and allowed the articles to be published. There were seven such articles until the moment when the authors of the study revealed themselves. Other works were under review.
As Lindsay, Bogossian and Plakrose, with their experiment, they wanted to show that in the field of social and humanitarian disciplines, ideological attitudes, as a rule, prevail over the requirements of science.
