My toze Nobel hotset!

The Chinese demanded the award of the Nobel Prize in Medicine

Copper newsChinese surgeon Rongxiang Xu (Rongxiang Xu) sued the Nobel Assembly of the Karolinska Institute – he is outraged that he was not awarded the prize in physiology and medicine in 2012, reports The Scientist (Snubbed for a Nobel?).

According to the plaintiff, he proved much earlier the possibility of reprogramming mature, differentiated cells into pluripotent stem cells.

Last year, the Nobel Prize in Medicine and Physiology was awarded to John B. Gurdon and Shinya Yamanaka "for discovering the possibility of reprogramming mature cells into pluripotent ones." For reprogramming, scientists introduced only four genes (Yamanaki factors) into the cells. A report on this work was published in 2006 in the journal Cell.

However, Xu claims that he made a similar discovery much earlier than the Nobel laureates and was able to reprogram mature cells "naturally, without any genetic manipulation." According to the surgeon, he managed to find a mixture consisting of a number of natural substances with which it is possible to reprogram cells of any tissues of the human body.

Moreover, Xu claims that the product created on the basis of this mixture has already helped to restore the skin affected by burns to 20 million (!!! – VM) to clients of his company based in the USA (currently the plaintiff himself lives there).

The surgeon believes that the proof of the appearance of stem cells instead of mature ones is the production of keratin protein 19, which was previously found only in a number of stem cells. At the same time, his works have not been published in any of the peer-reviewed scientific journals, and experiments on the differentiation of the obtained stem cells into cells of other body tissues have not been conducted.

Despite the lack of scientific publications, Xu filed a statement of claim stating that the award of the Nobel Prize for research in regenerative medicine harms his activities and reputation, and also allows him to be mocked. According to Xu's son, the lack of publications in peer–reviewed scientific journals does not prove anything yet - his father simply does not have time to write articles.

The Nobel Assembly, in turn, replied that they had never heard of Rongxiang Xu before this incident.

The Chinese was also not supported by the scientific community, which considers the absence of publications in peer-reviewed journals to be an important fact. "Words are one thing, but evidence is quite another. If it is really possible to reprogram mature cells into stem cells with the help of Xu's invention, then he should have proved that the resulting cells can turn into neurons, heart cells or other types of cells, as Yamanaki did. The protein called keratin 19 is produced not only by stem cells," said Spanish cell biologist Thomas Graf. Other researchers emphasize that the lack of scientific publications is proof in itself.
