"Old age pill" from Siberia: don't believe the journalists!

Siberian innovators do not advise to use chemicals with a "cure for old age"

FederalPressThe Russian media spread sensational news: "pills of eternal youth" were invented in Siberia.

Supposedly, the miracle drug is able to completely restore all body tissues, solve memory problems and prolong life up to 150 years. However, the lion's share of the described action of the drug G5, as the developers called it, turned out to be either an April Fool's joke, or an exaggeration of journalists. Details about the new drug G5, being developed in Novosibirsk and Tomsk, its pharmacological action and entry into the consumer market – in the material "FederalPress.Siberia".

In the media there was information about the creation of tablets of "eternal youth". The development belongs to Tomsk and Novosibirsk scientists. The Novosibirsk company SFM-Pharm, which became the first resident of the biotechnopark in the science city of Koltsovo, is directly developing the drug. Tests are being conducted at the Tomsk Research Institute of Pharmacology of the Siberian Branch of the Russian Academy of Medical Sciences. As reported by "FederalPress.Siberia", the investor of the project and the chairman of the board of directors of the biotechnopark Andrey Bekarev, only there are special laboratories in which it was possible to carry out research.

According to research, the drug is able to activate the release of stem cells, which increases by 40%. Those, in turn, should contribute to the complete restoration of tissues and organs. Initially, the drug was developed to combat cirrhosis of the liver. But during the tests it turned out that the spectrum of its action is much wider.

Scientists conducted experiments on animals: two groups of mice were studied. One was given the drug, the other was not. A year and a half later, the control group of mice not fed with miracle pills turned out to be twice as small as the mice from the group receiving the medication. At the same time, the animals were sick, bald. The experimental group lived up to 30 months without a hint of old age.

The drug was named G5. According to the developers, it will be effective in the treatment of severe diseases of the liver, lungs, diseases of the nervous system, and even restore memory. There is information that official clinical trials of the drug with the participation of volunteers should begin in November, and the drug will reach pharmacies in a few years.

Some media even wrote that scientists have already started using the medicine on themselves, including one of the creators of G5, the scientific secretary of the Research Institute of Pharmacology of the SB RAMS, Doctor of Medical Sciences Gleb Zyuzkov, used the medicine. Allegedly, he was even cured of some serious illness. However, as FederalPress found out.Siberia", the scientist is not aware that he, it turns out, was cured of something and generally took the drug.

"The medicine is still at the stage of preclinical development, it cannot be tried on humans yet! Gleb Zyuzkov was indignant. – The "Eternal Youth Pill" is nothing more than an overblown hype. No one has created a drug that will cure all diseases and allow you to delay old age. We are really currently developing a regenerating drug, it will be a hepatoprotector (pharmacological agents that have a positive effect on liver function – approx. "FederalPress.Siberia"). Perhaps the medicine will be able to cure chronic hepatitis and the initial stages of cirrhosis of the liver."

The Tomsk scientist complained that after the appearance in the media of loud headlines about the "pill of youth", about a hundred letters from those wishing not to grow old had already come to his e-mail. Zyuzkov called all the hype an "April Fool's joke."

The experiment on mice showed a really curious effect of the drug, which the journalists wrote about, he clarified in an interview with FederalPress.Siberia" Andrey Bekarev. Indeed, there is a large release of stem cells, which give the effect of restoring tissues and organs. That is why, by the way, the drug was originally intended as a cure for cirrhosis of the liver – the liver tends to recover well. But do not forget, the businessman stressed, that testing took place only on mice. How G5 will affect the human body is still unclear.

"It is almost impossible to make a drug to rejuvenate and increase life expectancy, you understand," says the chairman of the board of directors of the Koltsovsky biotechnopark. – To test such a medicine, it takes not just a few years, but several decades! Yes, the group of mice that were given the drug did look better and lived longer. But, of course, we cannot guarantee that the same effect will be with a person."

According to the investor, only preclinical studies are being completed in November 2013. This will be followed by a lengthy process of obtaining documents, permits, a list of clinics where the drug can be tested. According to Andrey Bekarev's estimates, it will all take at least a year and a half – even "with ideal layouts". "As practice shows, this period of time is likely to be twice as long in practice," the entrepreneur sums up.
