Sunscreens do not save from cancer :(

American experts from the National Cancer Institute last week received new data that question the effectiveness of sunscreen cosmetics. A study conducted by them showed that every eighth lotion did not prevent the effect of the sun on the skin. However, most consumers are still confident that using sunscreen protects them from the harmful effects of ultraviolet rays. As American scientists have seen, most sunscreen products do not filter ultraviolet light and do not block the penetration of dangerous rays into the skin, and many of these creams themselves can lead to the development of toxic components. It is not surprising that, according to Russian oncodermologists, skin cancer is actively getting younger. This, by the way, is also typical for Russia, whose citizens like to bask on the beaches of Turkey, Egypt and Thailand.

"Sunburn is a painful reaction of the skin to sunburn," Vladimir Molochkov, head of the department, Doctor of Medical Sciences, professor, head of the course of dermatovenerology at the Moscow Regional Research Clinical Institute, chief dermatovenerologist of the Ministry of Health of the Moscow Region, told the Gazeta correspondent. "The problem is very important, especially now, during the thinning of the ozone layer." According to WHO, about 132 thousand cases of malignant melanoma and more than 2 million cases of other skin cancers are registered annually in the world. Every third cancer diagnosed worldwide is skin cancer. Most skin cancers develop as a result of excessive exposure to ultraviolet radiation. It is known that sunburn received in childhood increases the risk of developing melanoma in children in the future.

Meanwhile, according to opinion polls, up to 35-40% of the population in the United States and Russia respond positively to the question whether they like to roast in the sun up to a dark skin tone. This means that they are at risk of getting skin cancer. The rays of the sun can turn any dark mole into a source of cancer. Researchers at the US National Cancer Institute suggest that more than 1 million new cases of skin cancer will be identified in the country this year.

This is largely due to the fact that advertising of sunscreens misleads consumers. So, dermatologists are skeptical about the information of manufacturers of creams that promise protection from the sun throughout the day. The product will have to be re-applied to the skin every 2 hours in direct sunlight. In addition, doctors warn that some medications, such as antidepressants, antibiotics, antifungal drugs and antidiabetic medications, as well as some cosmetics make the skin more prone to burns. About this in the instructions for using the cream – also not a word. But after reading it, you can come to the conclusion that it is enough to put on a cream with a high protection factor – and you can lie on the beach all day.

It is not surprising that sales of sunscreens in northern Russia are growing rapidly. According to the Expo-media group "Old Fortress", the sales volume of sunscreens is 0.5% of the total volume of the Russian paracosmetic market of $8.6 billion. So, only in pharmacy sales, the group of sunscreens in 2007 showed an annual dynamics of 75% and amounted to $16.9 million. "I can't say that the growth will continue in 2008, but I guarantee a 30% growth," Nikolai Bespalov, head of the analytical research department at the Farmexpert Central Research Institute, told the Gazeta correspondent.
