Disabled people are invited to test

Disabled volunteers are being recruited in Russia to test an exoskeleton

Copper newsThe creators of Russia's first medical exoskeleton are recruiting disabled volunteers to test it.

The organizers have already received hundreds of applications from people with musculoskeletal disorders. The start of the tests is scheduled for the autumn of this year, the Izvestia newspaper reports.

An exoskeleton is an external mechanical frame that attaches to the human body and allows you to multiply physical strength. He has a control system designed for various diseases. People after injuries, strokes, with joint injuries or arthrosis with the help of an exoskeleton will walk again and perform those movements that they cannot do on their own, the organizers promise.

"So far there is only one sample device for people with disabilities," said Ekaterina Bereziy, the founder of the ExoaThlet project. – But we want to see how he will interact with people who have different problems of the musculoskeletal system, so we need several testers. When choosing participants, we look not only at the physical capabilities of volunteers – such as a good cardiovascular system, a strong body, but also at their psycho-emotional state. There must be motivation and belief that improvements will not take long to come during rehabilitation."

To apply, you must fill out a questionnaire. Pre-clinical trials will be held this fall. Their participants will evaluate how comfortable it is for them to walk in an exoskeleton, and the organizers will adjust the control system in accordance with their comments. And in the summer of 2015, clinical trials will begin in rehabilitation centers for the disabled. If the exoskeleton successfully passes certification in the future, it will be possible to buy it for approximately 1-1.5 million rubles.

The exoskeleton was developed by the Exorobotics company on the basis of the Moscow State University Mechanics Research Institute by order of the Ministry of Industry and Trade. In June of this year, he took first place in the Startup Village innovation competition in Skolkovo, Popular Mechanics clarifies. The ExoaThlet project presented two versions of the exoskeleton: one – medical, for rehabilitation of disabled people, the second – emergency rescue.
