The names of ten winners of the competition of young biologists specializing in the field of molecular and cellular biology have been announced. Each of them will receive a grant of 600 thousand rubles a year. The grant is awarded for three years with the possibility of extension for one year. This grant program has been launched and will be carried out with the support of the Dynasty Foundation. About this "Polit.<url>" was informed by Konstantin Severinov, Doctor of Biological Sciences, Professor at Rutgers University (USA), head of two laboratories in Russia.

He noted that this is the first grant program for young candidates of sciences or holders of Ph.D. degrees in biology in our country. Now it becomes a permanent program of the foundation. In total, 87 applications were received for the competition in English (this was the selection condition). After that, all applications passed two stages of peer review, 80 Russian and foreign experts participated in the examination.

By the decision of the Expert Council on the program for Young Biologists in 2012, 10 scientists were awarded grants: Alexey Bogdanov, Vladimir Volkov, Nadezhda Vorobyova, Alexey Gavrilov, Alexandra Dubrovina, Ivan Kulakovsky, Victoria Mironova, Maxim Nagornykh, Maria Khrenova and Nikolai Shirokikh.

The list of reviewers and the composition of the Expert Council is published on the website of the Dynasty Foundation. It consists of five well–known researchers, and three of them are Nobel Prize laureates. Among them: physician and pharmacologist, winner of the Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine in 1998, Professor at George Washington University Ferid Murad; crystallographer, winner of the Nobel Prize in Chemistry in 2009, Professor at Yale University Thomas A. States (Thomas Steitz) and cytogeneticist, winner of the Nobel Prize in Physiology and Medicine 2009, Professor of Harvard Medical School Jack Szostak (Jack W. Szostak).

Applications from researchers up to 35 years old were accepted for the competition. The aim of the organizers was to support the most talented young biologists, increase their internal Russian mobility and scientific level, prepare them to create their own research groups. In addition, the task of the competition was to include young biologists in the international system of science organization. Konstantin Severinov, Mikhail Gelfand and Dmitry Chudakov took part in the Coordination Council for the development of the new grant.

The terms of the competition stipulate that each laureate will not be able to spend more than 300 thousand rubles a year on a salary. The remaining amount will be spent on "purchasing consumables, additional equipment and components (including computers), attracting the necessary services, participating in conferences, paying for the publication of articles." If part of the money cannot be used this year, then no more than 25% of the grant amount can be spent next year.
