The International Innovation Forum has started in St. Petersburg

For three days, presentations of advanced technologies and innovative developments, round tables, discussions and business meetings will be held at the event site.

The motto of the forum this year is "Ahead of tomorrow". In parallel with the Innovation Forum, the Expoforum hosts the exhibition "Russian Industrialist". Every year these two events gather more than 10 thousand participants. This year, there is no less interest in them, including from foreign participants, despite sanctions and retaliatory measures. Thus, 15 countries are participating in the Innovation Forum this year, and the geography of participants from Russia covers almost the entire country: Chelyabinsk, Yaroslavl, Tomsk, Khanty-Mansiysk, Krasnodar, Moscow, Barnaul, Volgograd, Perm, Severodvinsk, Murmansk and many other cities.

The Governor of St. Petersburg Georgy Poltavchenko at the official opening ceremony of the forum noted that innovation and the knowledge economy today is the way to development, which is enshrined in the Strategy of long-term development of the city until 2030.

The fact that the Innovation Forum, which is the largest event in the field of innovation in the North-West, takes place in St. Petersburg is not accidental. The Northern capital has historical prerequisites for the development of innovative activities: a strong scientific potential and human resources base, an advantageous transport and logistics location, a diversified economy.

"Today, St. Petersburg provides comprehensive support to innovative projects, including those aimed at modernizing enterprises, increasing resource and energy efficiency," said Sergey Movchan, Vice-Governor of St. Petersburg. He also added that an effective innovation policy is a key direction in the development of the region.

The Innovation Forum presents the developments of urban enterprises and clusters: polymer cluster, composite, medical, environmental instrumentation and biotechnology, etc. The exhibition hall of the forum presents a variety of fields – from radio electronics to IT.

The Business Contacts exchange has been operating on the event site for all three days – this is an additional opportunity for industry, business and innovators to establish contact.

At the forum, an agreement was signed between St. Petersburg and the city of Tampere (Finland) on cooperation in the field of life sciences, including pharmaceuticals, innovation policy and innovation systems, the development of "smart cities" and cooperation between universities. Cities will have something to learn from each other. As Georgy Poltavchenko noted, Tampere is known for innovations. "Back in the 19th century, the first electric light bulb in Scandinavia was lit there. Today, the investment process in Tampere is developing successfully. And within the framework of the agreement, we can have a useful and mutually beneficial cooperation," Georgy Poltavchenko added.

Many projects and developments at the Innovation Forum are presented at the stand of the Committee for Science and Higher Education of St. Petersburg. This year it is dedicated to biotechnology and medicine.

The largest universities and scientific organizations of St. Petersburg presented their promising developments here. For example, St. Petersburg State University presented a new type of antibiotic and a new method of searching for pathogenic proteins – amyloids. GUAP presented an inductive energy storage device that can be used to ensure the smooth operation of medical devices. Medical University named after Mechnikova presented a portable medical system "Compass", which can provide "rapid visualization" of the patient's body, perform high-tech operations. A big plus is that this system can be used in "field" conditions: it is promising to use it in emergency medicine or military, when it is impossible or economically inefficient to use a large stationary system. The Chemical and Pharmaceutical Academy presented samples of nanocomposite materials for tissue engineering for accelerated wound healing.

Also, within the framework of the Innovation Forum, the winners of the competition for the best innovative projects in the field of science and higher professional education were awarded. This year the winners were 24 author's groups: 10 winners were announced in the nomination "Best scientific and innovative idea", 8 - in the nomination "Best innovative business proposal", and 6 more winners – in the nomination "Best innovative product".
