You can make a good business on genomics

The genomic boom continues

According to the forecasts of the Los Angeles-based company DeciBio, engaged in marketing analysis, the market for genome research equipment will increase by 6% annually over the next five years and will reach US$ 8.9 billion by 2016.

Part of this increase will be due to the growth of the market for next-generation sequencers and consumables for them, which will increase by 16% annually and reach $2.25 billion by 2016.

According to DeciBio representative Stephane Budel, genomics is expected to be the most growing segment in the field of biomedical research.

The company's report mentions that over the past 10 years, technological advances have reduced the cost of sequencing the personal genome from $ 3 billion to $ 3,000. Apparently, in the future, such technologies will be increasingly used in clinical practice to search for disease-associated mutations, for example, in tumor biopsies.

In the coming years, growth is also expected in areas such as digital PCR (polymerase chain reaction), quantitative PCR and proteomics. Most of this growth will occur in countries outside the United States and Europe, while the need for such technologies in Brazil, Russia, India and China will increase by 5-15% annually.
