Alcohol caused every sixteenth case of cancer in Russia

Naked Science

Worldwide, it causes three quarters of millions of cancers a year – and mostly among men. In Russia, the frequency of "alcoholic" cancer is noticeably higher than on the planet as a whole.

Scientists from the International Agency for Research on Cancer published in The Lancet Oncology assessment of the effect of alcohol on the incidence of cancer on Earth (Rumgay et al., Global burden of cancer in 2020 attributable to alcohol consumption: a population-based study). It turned out that about one case of cancer out of 25 is associated with alcohol consumption. The more a person drinks, the higher the probability of such consequences.

The proportion of cancer caused by alcohol consumption for different countries of the world. The severity of the situation for Russia is clearly visible. Figures from the article by Rumgay et al.

To find out the effect of alcohol, the authors took its consumption by country in 2010, and then compared it with the number of cancer cases in the same states in 2020 – based on the presence of a ten-year lag between the consumption of alcoholic beverages and the cancer they cause. It turned out that the total number of "drunk" cases of cancer on the planet is 741,300 per year. 76.7% are among men, due to the fact that they more often consume the appropriate drinks. Alcohol most often caused cancer of the esophagus, larynx, oral cavity, as well as colon, liver and, in the case of women, breast.

Red shows the proportion of cancers caused by excessive consumption of alcoholic beverages. Pink shows the proportion of risky use, the rest falls on moderate use. The breakdown is given by different regions of the planet.

Moderate alcohol consumption (less than 20 grams on average per day) gave 13.9% of all cases of "drunk" cancer. The so–called risky use - 20-60 grams per day – 39.4% of cases. Excessive consumption – more than 60 grams per day – gave the remaining 46.7% of cases.

The largest share was in South Africa (72.9%), as well as countries of Eastern and Central Europe. It should be taken into account that the proportion of abusing people in the population is usually small: this means that for them the risk of such cancer cases is several times higher than for the population of the planet as a whole. According to researchers, for Russia 6.0% of all cancer cases are caused by alcohol, while for the whole world – only 4.1%. This is explained by the increased level of consumption of strong drinks in our country.
