Give flowers to women…

Men who often give flowers have bad spermAlexander Khramov, Infox.ru

Scientists have proved that jealous and active suitors have low-quality sperm. They compensate for their disadvantage by gifting their favorite flowers and driving away competitors from them.

The results of the study conducted by specialists from the University of Western Australia are published in the journal PLOS ONE (Leivers et al., Sperm Competition in Humans: Mate Guarding Behavior Negatively Correlates with Ejaculate Quality).

There are two strategies of male reproductive behavior in the animal world. Adherents of one of the strategies spend their efforts on protecting their partner from competitors, but at the same time they do not need to worry about the quality of their sperm. Supporters of the second type of strategy maintain the quality of sperm at a high level and therefore are not afraid that their female will mate with strangers.

The authors of the article for the first time tried to find analogies of these two strategies in humans. They selected 45 healthy male and heterosexual volunteers for the study. First, the volunteers were asked to fill out a questionnaire of 38 items concerning their relationships with women.

In particular, the scientists were interested in how often the study participants give their halves expensive gifts and flowers, whether they avoid introducing lovers to their friends, whether they dress up before a date and whether they rush at passers-by who look too closely at their companions.

Then the volunteers brought the scientists semen samples obtained during masturbation. In the laboratory, the authors of the article evaluated sperm for sperm concentration, their mobility and speed.

It turned out that in the sperm of jealous and active suitors, regardless of their lifestyle, there are few spermatozoa, they are sedentary, swim slowly and chaotically. On the contrary, the sperm of men who do not pay much attention to their ladies turned out to be much more high-quality.

In the future, scientists hope to find out how plastic the breeding strategies they have identified are. It is possible that a man, feeling a decrease in the quality of his sperm, becomes more jealous. According to an alternative hypothesis, reproductive behavior strategies are fixed genetically and do not change during life.
