Provoker of metastases

Scientists have explained how prostate cancer metastasizes

The work of Austrian scientists reveals the mechanism that causes the tumor to form metastases. Their discovery will help to diagnose the aggressiveness of the prostate tumor in time, as well as improve the treatment of this and other types of oncological diseases.

Researchers from The Vienna Medical University has discovered the important role of the KMT2C protein in the development of prostate tumors. KMT2C functions as a regulator of central cellular processes, but the loss of these regulatory properties as a result of cancer-related mutations leads to the proliferation of the proto-oncogene MYC. As a result, the cells begin to divide at an increased rate, spreading beyond the focal tumor.

The article Limberger et al. KMT2C Methyltransferase Domain regulated 1 INK4A expression suppresses Prostate Cancer metastasis is published in the journal Molecular Cancer – VM.

"Our study allows us to take a fresh look at the previously little-studied transition from localized prostate cancer to terminal metastatic," commented the author of the work Lucas Kenner. Currently, a localized prostate tumor responds well to treatment, but patients with metastases most often have a disappointing prognosis.

It is possible to determine the aggressiveness of a tumor by the KMT2C biomaker at an early stage by blood, scientists explain. These patients can be assigned to a group for treatment with MYC inhibitors that have already passed clinical trials.

Equally important, a high level of KMT2C mutations is characteristic of many types of cancer, including breast, lung, bowel, bladder and skin tumors. "Thus, our results have great potential in the diagnosis and treatment of malignant tumors in general," Kenner concluded.

In another study, scientists presented another experimental strategy for prostate tumor therapy, which can provide effective treatment for more than 90% of all cases.
