Tin for weight loss

Dentists presented an improved "intraoral" device for weight loss

No, it's not some kind of simulator. The authors of the development were inspired by the experiments of colleagues from the 1980s and, apparently, by the famous rule of those who are eager to lose weight as soon as possible: if you want to lose weight, sew your mouth.

Obesity has become an increasingly common phenomenon and in recent decades has acquired the scale of a real global epidemic in both developed and developing countries. According to scientists, there are 1.9 billion people in the world who are overweight, and another 650 million are obese. Every year, about 2.8 million die due to related problems. By 2030, 57.8% of the world's adult population will face overweight, which, as we remember, often leads to diabetes, hypertension, cardiovascular diseases, arthritis, cancer, depression, eating disorders and so on.

Weight loss can increase life expectancy and reverse many diseases. The first step to this is a revision of diet and physical activity. Although calorie restriction and increased energy consumption in theory lead to success, for many people their effects are either insignificant or successful only in the short term due to poor motivation and constant violation of strict rules. In addition to the diet, various drugs appeared, but many of them had serious consequences, were addictive and were eventually withdrawn from the market.

In the 1980s, as a method for weight loss, they tried fixing the jaws with a wire: after such a procedure, a person could only eat liquids and lost 20-30 kilograms in six months. Nevertheless, many patients began to experience anxiety, an attack of vomiting could end in asphyxia, and some developed acute mental disorders and periodontal disease.

Dentists from the University of Otago (New Zealand) and Leeds (UK) perfected this idea and presented DentalSlim Diet Control – the world's first intraoral device for weight loss and control, which is installed on the back teeth of the upper and lower jaws. The system consists of magnetic and locking bolts with silicone gaskets so as not to scratch the gum, and is made according to individual standards. As described in an article published in the British Dental Journal, DentalSlim Diet Control allows you to open your mouth by only two millimeters: that is, you can eat, again, only liquids, but talk and breathe – according to the developers, without restrictions.

"It is a non-invasive, reversible, cost-effective and attractive alternative to surgical procedures. And with such a device, there are no adverse consequences," said Professor Paul Brunton, lead author of the study.

He confirmed his words with tests in which seven European women participated (average age – 36 years, height – 162.5 centimeters, weight – 107.98 kilograms, body mass index – 40.84). The participants were given DentalSlim Diet Control and asked to stick to a "liquid" diet: they were given four bottles of a drink a day (1200 calories in total) plus one protein shake; they could drink tea and coffee without restrictions. Each woman was also provided with a special tool that could be used to remove the system in an emergency.

In two weeks, the subjects lost an average of 6.36 kilograms – about 5.1% of the initial weight – and were interested in continuing to lose weight, although some sometimes complained of discomfort. Alas, 14 days after removing the device, all participants gained a little weight – about 0.73 kilograms.

The authors of the development note that DentalSlim Diet Control is useful not only for those who are thirsty for transformation, but also for patients who need to quickly lose extra pounds – for example, before an important operation. "The beauty is also that after two or three weeks, the magnets can be turned off. Then a period of less strict diet will follow, and then patients can return to treatment again. This will allow us to use a step–by-step approach to weight loss, supported by the advice of a nutritionist, in order to achieve long-term results," Brunton summed up.
