Once again about the benefits of black rice

Black rice is the key to longevity

Researchers from China claim that antioxidants from black rice have increased the lifespan of fruit flies by 13.6%.

Antioxidants inhibit the undesirable effect of reactive oxygen–containing particles on the body - such particles can attack cells and accelerate the aging process. Previously, it was demonstrated that black rice, popular in China and rich in antioxidants, can reduce the risk of developing tumor diseases, cardiovascular diseases, diabetes and Alzheimer's disease. Now there is also information that the substances contained in it can interfere with the aging process.

Zhen-Yu Chen and colleagues from the University of Hong Kong added an extract isolated from black rice to the food of fruit flies and observed that flies receiving such a dietary supplement lived longer than ordinary representatives of their species - their life expectancy increased from 44 to 50 days.

Anthocyanin – cyanidin-3-O-glucoside isolated from black rice

The extract isolated from rice contains two anthocyanins – cyanidin-3-O-glucoside and petunidin-3-O-glucoside. The researchers added various doses of the extract to the food of fruit flies and found that when the extract was contained in the insect food at a concentration of 30 mg/ml, their life time increased. Anthocyanins increase the expression of enzymes-oxidoreductases that promote the binding of oxidants, and also activate the work of a gene that suppresses the degeneration of nervous tissue. Also, the isolated compounds inhibit the expression of the Methuselah gene in accordance with a mechanism that, as previously demonstrated, contributes to an increase in life expectancy.

The researchers also tested the effect of the extract on flies exposed to a herbicide that promotes neurodegeneration, there were two groups of subjects – a group of ordinary flies and a group of genetically modified flies with a gene responsible for the occurrence of Alzheimer's disease. The studied herbicide promotes the emergence of reactive oxygen-containing particles and is usually used to study the pathogenesis of neurodegenerative diseases. The extract increased the survival time of both types of flies – both normal and genetically modified, however, researchers prefer not to make loud statements that black rice extract is able to slow down the development of age-related neurodegenerative diseases, such as Alzheimer's disease.

Zhimin Su (Zhimin Xu), who studied antioxidants from black rice, notes that red or black bran from colored rice are a valuable source of antioxidants, both soluble – anthocyanins and fat-soluble (vitamin E). The synergistic effect of both antioxidants can prevent inflammatory processes, usually associated with chronic diseases.
