A three million nanoprize

The Rusnanoprize-2012 prize will be awarded to the scientist who "decorated" living cells

RIA NewsAcademician of the Russian Academy of Sciences Sergey Lukyanov, who studies fluorescent proteins that are used for scientific and medical purposes, became the winner of the Rusnanoprize international award in the field of nanotechnology in 2012 in the field of Medicine, Pharmacology and Biotechnology, the organizing committee of the Open Innovations Forum reports.

The use of "multicolored" fluorescent proteins that glow under the influence of optical radiation makes it possible to observe the processes taking place in a living cell in real time.

In 2008, Osamu Shimomura, Martin Chalfie and Roger Tsien were awarded the Nobel Prize in Chemistry for the discovery and research of the first green fluorescent protein (GFP).

Lukyanov found a way by genetic methods to obtain a "palette" of fluorescent proteins glowing in various colors – from yellow to purple.

The discovery of the Russian scientist provided a breakthrough in the development of methods for studying living cells: it became possible to observe many processes in them simultaneously.

"Sergey Lukyanov's developments have made a significant contribution to fundamental and applied science and paved the way for the latest developments in the field of molecular and cellular biology, biomedicine and biotechnology; products created on the basis of these developments are recognized and widely used all over the world," Chalfi said, quoted in a press release.

The winner of the prize for the commercialization of Lukyanov's developments was the American company Clontech Labs.

The award will be presented at the Open Innovations Forum, which will be held from October 31 to November 2 in Moscow. The monetary part of the award in 2012 will amount to three million rubles.

The Rusnanoprize Award was established in 2009 by the then state corporation Rusnano. The prize is awarded to both Russian and foreign citizens. Of the six laureates awarded over the past three years, two are foreign developers.

The Rusnanoprize is awarded annually to the authors of scientific and technological developments and inventions in the field of nanotechnology introduced into mass production with an annual volume of at least $ 10 million.

The monetary part of the award in 2012 will amount to three million rubles.

In 2011, the award in the direction of "nanomaterials" was received by the scientific director of the Institute of Problems of Chemical and Energy Technologies of the Siberian Branch of the Russian Academy of Sciences, Academician of the Russian Academy of Sciences Gennady Sakovich for the development of technology for the production of synthetic nanoscale diamonds from carbon atoms of explosive molecules during their detonation.

The Open Innovations Forum is organized by Russian development institutions, including Rusnano, RVC, the Skolkovo Foundation, the Foundation for Assistance to the Development of Small Forms of Enterprises in the Scientific and Technical Sphere, as well as Vnesheconombank and the Government of Moscow.
